History
Circa 300 BC was mentioned already in the bilge Rose herbal books, because one was already aware of their medicinal benefit, but also toxicity. The root was pulverized used for instance as a warm and invigorating superintendents funds. People who are allergic should react easily, cutting the flower stems to be careful, because the escaping sap can cause severe skin irritation
Hellebores
Happy in containers as long as they're kept well watered. The Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, has white flowers with yellow anthers and leathery, dark-green leaves, and will flower year after year.
Sweet violets
In milder areas, these violets, Viola odorata, flower in late autumn and continue right through spring. The purple flowers have a sweet fragrance.
